BEAM Events

BEAM Robotics is heavy into "strange". Strange power sources (solarcells...), strange controlling electronics ("Microcore? Bicore? Solarengines?"), and strange attitudes ("Microprocessors? We need no stinkin' microprocessors for our walkers..."). A large part of its appeal is that it doesn't take much to get started in BEAM Robotics - it's surprising what you can make out of a few broken walkmans, a dead VCR and a few new bits of electronics.

These are the BEAM competitions being hosted this year:

  • Solaroller  Solar-powered Drag Racing!

  • Photovore: Who's robot is smarter, faster, and stronger?

  • SolarSpeeder: How good can you aim your SolarSpeeder? Sponsored by Solarbotics.

There are many online resources for BEAM Robotics. Try starting at the links page at www.solarbotics.com, or the vast amount of information at www.solarbotics.net and work your way from there, or try your favourite search engine. In the meanwhile, review the following documents that are designed to help you get started in building your BEAM competitor!
