2003 Events List
Each event has been rated on the skills levels typically required to enter a
successful robot. These are not hard and fast rules and anyone may
enter event without "prerequisite". Here's a complete PDF
download (yes, it's the same as 2002) of the full ruleset. If you want just the rules for a particular
event, download them from that event's sub-page.
If you need a map to the location of any of the events, please consult this
map.
Please note: The following events will only be run if there is sufficient
entries to warrant it.
-
One of the most popular robot events on earth! Your robot (autonomous or
remote control) is designed to locate and push, flip, roll, shove, throw,
hurl, or otherwise remove the opposing robot from a 5 foot ring in the
shortest period of time!
| Note: The 2002 Event was the last time Sumo followed the
old 9
x 9", 5kg size standard. Presently the Japanese size standard will be
the standard (20 x 20cm, 3kg). New rules also for tethered R/C devices. |

If you find regular Sumo Wrestling a bit too large for you (or you live
in a very small place), try this out - Pocket-sized sumo wrestlers!

The line follow is a classic introductory robot
design and requires a minimal amount of resources. (Go to your
favorite search engine and enter "line following robot").
These robots can use microprocessor control or simple digital or analog
control systems and are highly visual and entertaining to watch! A
great event for re-programmed Mini-Sumos!
-
We have recently a "twist" to this competition to incorporate
our sponsors petroleum theme. Our model has an ablaze Oil
Derrick (lit candle) in one of it's four! Your autonomous robot must start
from a defined location, locate, and extinguish the "well head"!
The quickest time wins!
Skill level: Advanced (Post Secondary and up)

Walking Robots have always been one of the "Holy Grails" of
Robotics. Watch these robot tackle an obstacle course, hallway navigation, and
out-and-out speed track.
Skill level: Intermediate (High School and up)
This publicly-judged event is for any creation you have that is the least
bit techno-geek. Put wheels on your Palm-Pilot? Built a solar-powered
tape-dispenser? Bottled-cold-fusion power cells? This is the event for you! Skill level:
Open
A much larger, messier version of the popular robot sumo wrestling
contest. Held in a 4x4' platform full of obstacles (ever see
"Sumo" on Full
Metal Challenge? Sorta like a junior version of that), the ultimate goal
is to shove your opponent out before your robot gives into the hazards of
the ring! Not only that - you can't drive it. It has to be
self-guiding (autonomous)!
Autonomous Skill level: Intermediate (High School
and up)
Come and learn about robotics, whether you are a beginner and want to
find out more, or an experienced robot builder, there is something for
everyone. Lectures and workshops (with hands on activities) will take place
throughout the day.
The objective of the Workshop is to encourage student roboticists to
get started in this exiting field by building a SAM Bot, (SAIT Autonomous
MiniSumo ) to compete in the Western Canadian Robot Games. The fee for the
workshop is $40 with a $30 refund when you register and compete in the
Games. This amazing deal is due to the generous sponsorship of the SAIT ICT
Department.
