Mini Sumo Workshops 2005

Important dates

Here's some information about the 2005 Mini-sumo ( SAM-bot ) workshops...

The  only robot kits we are building on that day are the SAM-bot's, but we will have the MINESWEEPER arena's set up for you to experiment with.  You might also like to build the MINESWEEPER resource kit which includes a practice "mine" and sensor circuit boards ( $22. 00+gst )

Early Bird Workshop

What is a SAM Bot?

SAIT Autonomous MiniSumo Bot  is a simple MiniSumo Bot kit, heavily subsidized by the SAIT ICT Department to promote robotics and electronics to beginner groups and to help get them involved in the Robot Game

The SAM-Bot Mini sumo is built around the powerful Tamiya dual motor-gearset and L298 motor driver board (good to 40V, 4A) with an analog mini sumo controller board module.  The kit has everything you need to build a competition ready robot in one day  (last year a workshop built Bot placed third in the MiniSumo contest) but there is ample opportunity to customize and expand your Bot. . The Bot weighs only 200grams leaving you 300grams for modifications. With the optional breadboard module and an inexpensive AVR microcontroller (or Basic Stamp, PIC etc.) and a bit of programming, you can turn your SAM Bot into an Intelligent Autonomous MiniSumo Bot (or SAM I AM Bot - You will push them out the ring, you will push them while you sing)

Our society resource page will gather information on how to improve all elements of your expandable SAM-bot.

Give your SAM Bot a custom paint job.  Bring a printout of any graphic 100mm x 200mm - take a look at the examples here -  to personalize your SAM Bot.

Cost

The workshop cost is only $40 per team, including one robot kit, all parts and instruction in SAIT's  electronic fabrication facility.  If you register your robot in the contest on or before May 14 and compete, you will receive a $30 competitors pass!  You'll be able to compete in the main mini sumo event, get you t-shirt and goody bag for only $10.00, for NON-WCRS member and FREE for WCRS member!

Any proceeds of this robot kit go entirely to the society to help promote and encourage our future engineers and technologists.

Kits and places are limited so register early...

Conditions

Priority is given to teams of two or more, students, first time roboticists, and Society members.

From our experience a minimum age of 10 ( unless a parent or gaurdian is on the team ) and a team of at least two are needed to build a successful Bot.

You will be working with sharp tools and hot soldering irons,  soldering fumes can trigger asthma attacks.  Please do not expect to be able to drop young kids off for the day, we cannot provide that level of supervision. There is a limit of one kit per team.

Kits are to be built in the workshop, and are not intended as a take-home project. There will be an unsupervised lunch break but lunch is NOT provided. Eating in the FAB Labs is not allowed but there are places nearby where lunch can be bought..

Application

To reserve a kit and your teams place in a workshop, please email Craig and Quentin with your team members, school ( if applicable ) and a reliable phone number.

Payment is required one week in advance of the workshop.
