Roboganza 2003

Challenge:  Robotic Jousting Tournament

 Informal Royal Rules and Regulations

Objective:

  1. Follow black line in shortest possible time
  2. Dismount opponents knight

Ye Royal Playing Field:

The playing field shall consist of a line of black electrical tape which forms a straight line 1 meter long with a loopback on each end.  A similar but opposite shape is laid in parallel with the original track, 15 centimeters from the first track.

Ye Noble Steed:

The robot represents the knights faithful steed.  The main body of the steed must not extend past 7 centimeters from the line on the left or right side (except for the feeler and lance).  The steed must not contact the opponents steed in the course of the bout except with the feeler mechanism.    The force of the feeler must not be sufficient to knock the opponents steed off the line.

The "saddle" shall consist of a platform exactly 6 by 10 lego units on a side.  A wall on the forward side of the saddle may be built with standard lego blocks exactly 4 blocks high to protect the knight from a direct frontal assault.  The platform must be 14 cm off the ground and parallel to the ground.  The platform must be unobstructed

The Lego knight must be placed facing forward in the exact location of the saddle shown here!

Ye Play:

The knights will be started at the beginning of the lines facing each other at the drop of the princesses hanky, or by dropping the princess if the hanky is unavailable.  The steeds must follow the line toward each other.  As the steeds pass, the robot must strike out at the opponents knight in an effort to dismount him.  The lance must not contact the other steed, but may make contact with the competitors lance.    The lance must not attempt to break through the saddle wall intentionally.  Points will be deducted if the opponents saddle-wall is knocked over

The steed may make three loops around the circuit in a single bout.  When a knight is dismounted, the bout is over.

Scoring:

Scoring is kept simple to create the most innovation in the design...

10 points for each successful loop

20 points for knocking the opponents knight from the steed.

-10 points for knocking the opponents saddle-wall over ( or knocking off the entire saddle!)

-10 points for your own saddle from falling over due to weak construction. ( Don't try to rig your saddle to fall over at the slightest touch!! )

 Ye olde deadline:

Deadline will be announced during the event.

Promotional email...

Get ready for the ultimate robotic jousting match, folks!  We're all set to go for our Robotgana challenge at the UofC this Weds night!   Absolutely free ( except for parking and membership fee's if you're not a full member yet! ).  All you need to bring is your fertile imagination and (optionally) a standard lego man to ride your steed.

We'll provide your group the mindstorm kit, and a pre-written chunk of code which should get you through the challenge.  If you wish to use your own code and/or programming language for your RCX, you'll have to bring your own laptop with software.  DO NOT BRING YOUR OWN MINDSTORMS ( we don't want parts getting mixed up )

The action starts promptly at 7:00pm Feb 19th in room ICT244 in the ICT building at the west entrance to the U.  (map to come).  Please arrive anytime after 6:30 so we're ready to start at 7pm.

Have a look at the list ( below ) to confirm that you're there.  If you're not there, but would like to come and help/witness, come on down!

See you then!
