December 12 , 2001 Agenda

Time:  Dec 12, 2001 (Weds)  7PM - 9PM

Place:  MD203 / MD213 HEART Building

Meeting Objective:

Tonight is rather a "Motor Driver" evening AND our Annual General Meeting ( AGM 2001 ).  This means a quick peek at the books and distribution of membership cards / promotional postcards.

We've also got a few mini-sumo robots up and running, although our groups needs a few more for demonstration days!

For the beginners...

How to drive motors forward and backward using simple Single-Pole / Double-Throw switches.  How to turn on motors with simple transistor switch.  Some BEAM-style motor solutions.

For Intermediate / advanced robot designers...

Using the L293/L298  motor controller integrated circuits.  Simulation of L293 using Virtual Vulcan software package.  Demonstration of more advanced drivers.  Craig ( JCM Inventures ) will donate 10 motor controller PCB's to anyone with a good application for them!

For discussion...

You!  Bring your robot in  and let's see how YOU got your motor running!

December 12, 2001 WCRS Meeting #3

Meeting Minutes

Craig opened the meeting with an introduction to the proposed meeting agenda, and a review of the last meeting’s minutes. One outstanding subject that came up:

Several photocopiers are still available for donation, but require a place to store them. This must be done soon. We are still looking for some volunteer space.

Proposed is:

to tear them down in place and retain only those items that can be of use (electronics, gears, belts, etc…).

to use them in a trade show/demonstration ("junkyard wars" style)

This is all that was discussed from old business.

New business:

WCRS Membership cards will be produced tonight to all those who pay the $5 fee.

Craig reviewed the WCRG/WCRS year-end, including current year’s expenses. This information is posted on the web site. Carl D. moved, Mark seconded the motion to pass.

Craig called for volunteers to distribute the advertising postcards.

Review of the Red Deer Alberta electrical league trade show by Carl D. and Dave H. The purpose to attend the show was to demonstrate the mini sumo and to expose the games to new potential sponsors and recruits. There was a large contingent of students from different colleges as well, and the exposure was good.

Next month there is a celebration at the Pumphouse theatre in Calgary for inventors on January 12, 2002 (Saturday). The Society should be there.

At the next meeting in January, the Aibo is coming. A representative from Sony will demo the unit here in Calgary. This is an advanced robot with advanced features and abilities. Craig presented the official Sony Aibo web site.

Several members briefly presented their devices. There were some remote controls devices, mini-sumo, chassis, and a couple boxes of "robots-in-process" ("parts" to the untrained eye).

Next meeting date: Suggestion is to alternate Wednesdays and Thursdays to give some people a chance to attend who may otherwise not be able to attend. Proposed date Thursday January 10th (need a meeting before the Inventor’s meeting at the Pumphouse).

Next meeting subject matter may include compressed air / pneumatics, hydraulics for use in robots.

Membership card were produced and the $5 membership collected.
